Bihar historic sites

Bihar is a state in the eastern part of India's gangetic plains. It is one of the cradles of ancient Indian civilization, a land where Buddhism and Jainism emerged. Bihar is also home of what some scholars suggest is the world's oldest and still active Hindu temple dedicated to goddess Mundeshwari.

Sites in Bihar are repeatedly mentioned in the oldest dated texts of Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism. The Indian epics mention it as the sacred geography where great minds were born and rituals in honor of ancestors are traditionally performed.

Bihar is home to over 100 historic sites, and remains a source of archaeological discoveries such as the Didarganj Yakshi statue and new inscriptions that have rewritten India's place in art history.
