West Bengal historic sites

West Bengal is a state in the eastern plains of India. It is ancient and has played a major role in shaping the history and culture of India.

Important ancient sites include Chandraketugarh with ruins and terracotta art dated from the 4th-century BCE to the 8th-century CE. These depict life and culture in ancient India as well as some of earliest known depiction of Panchatantra tales and other Indian legends.

West Bengal is home to over 100 historic sites. These include numerous terracotta temples built after the 15th century, as well as older stone temples. It also preserves Buddhist relics at Tamralipta and Jain art at Pakbirra. West Bengal sites are notable for its architecture, one shaped by local abundance of clay and terracotta innovations.
