Gujarat is a coastal state in west India. It is home to Harappan Civilization sites that have been dated to about 3000 BCE. Archaeological evidence suggests that Gujarat's ports and ships routinely sailed to Africa, Middle East and Southeast Asia before 400 CE.
Gujarat is home to historic and majestic Somnath Temple as well as sites Hindus and Jains consider sacred and ancient. It preserves some of the oldest known Hindu temples and inscriptions in India. Palitana hosts one of the largest group of Jain temples. The central and northern regions of Gujarat have numerous step wells and groups of temples. Over 300 historic sites present the history of Indian culture in stone and marble.
