Maharashtra is a state in the western region of India, with a diverse terrain that includes mist shrouded Western Ghats, sun-kissed coasts, majestic river valleys, rocky Deccan plateau and plains. It is here that one of the world's ancient active ports thrived for 2000 years that shared Indian culture and products with the Sumerians and Roman cultures.
Maharashtra is home to numerous cave monuments including the mesmerizing Ajanta Caves with its frescoes that dance with vivid tales. Other sites such as Ellora feature the world's largest monolithic temple called Kailasha, Sanskrit inscriptions that contain some of earliest numerals in a form that we use them today. Maharashtra is home to over 250 historic sites.
